International Women’s Day 2017 takes place on March 8th and we at House PR wanted to share our favourite events taking place in London to celebrate and honour the limitless achievements of women around the globe. This event is so crucial as it flags the countless gender inequalities that still exist around the world, and brings these issues to the forefront of conversation to create a fairer, more open-minded environment for everyone.
The London event calendar kicked off on Sunday the 5th with the women’s march through the streets of London. #March4Women attracted thousands of individuals, including celebrities from Annie Lennox to Mayor Sadiq Khan, who told the crowds “This is what a feminist looks like.” The assembly heard speeches from the organisers at a rally outside City Hall before marching along Tower Bridge holding banners high with the #March4Women slogan.
Here’s House PR’s top picks for how you can get involved:
- Dance Like I’ve Got Diamonds Presents: International Women’s Day – 08/03/17
This all female punk music night is collaborating with International Women’s Day. The George Tavern is hosting the hotly anticipated event; where there will be performances from The Tuts and Peach Club (two remarkable feminist bands that are crushing it right now) and an intimate discussion from young activists Girls Against. With tickets starting at only £5, we’re sold!
- Women Stand Up – 08/03/17
Oxfam and Comic Relief have joined forces to host ‘Women Stand Up’ a comedy gig at the Leicester Square Theatre on Wednesday 8th March. With the likes of Bridget Christie, Shappi Khorsandi, Evelyn Mok, Athena Kugblenu, Mae Martin, Birthday Girls and Massive Dad. Why would you want to give this a miss?
- Free Charity Burlesque Class and World Record Attempt – 11/03/17
What more could you ask for than a free burlesque master class to finish of your week? The team at Sapphira’s Showgirls welcomes you to join them at #BeBoldForChange with burlesque for International Women’s Day. If getting racy with accessories really isn’t your thing you can always get involved and try to beat the World Record by attempting for ‘Most Balloons Popped on a Burlesque Costume’. Getting dressed up for the event isn’t obligatory (but isn’t that half the fun?)
- Castle Climbing Centre Celebrates Female Participation in Sport – 08/03/17
The Castle Climbing Centre will be holding a climbing event with London Ladies Climb (LLC) to celebrate IWD. The event intends to inspire more women to try new sports. In conjunction with #BeBoldForChange the event will break some of those myths around climbing, instead promoting an all-inclusive climbing environment for everyone and anyone.
